GSX-R series: displacements and models discontinued

gsxr series

Suzuki has been A leader for decades in the "super sports car" segment, it has not been easy to remain a protagonist for over 35 years and always have top performance in the category. The vast experience accumulated over many years of being in the Superbike and MotoGP world championships played a key role in achieving and maintaining such high performance for the GSX-R series.

It is a matter of passion, technique, research and of course a lot of skill and organization. All qualities that the home of Hamamatsu made his own and which he reiterated with more than one million motorcycles marketed in every corner of the world. It may seem easy to continue to succeed when you start with a winning model, but that is not the case.

In fact, from year to year, each new model must encapsulate all the technology that Japanese engineers have eviscerated on the world's racetracks, billions of data, telemetry, successes and disappointments, and experiences between small and large displacements--all concentrated in a single acronym that has always filled motorcycle enthusiasts around the world with excitement and passion: GSX-R.

The writer, in the 80s and 90s, has nurtured his great passion for two wheels mainly through the Suzuki brand, from his presence in the motorcycle world championship - with legendary riders such as Kevin Schwantz - to its GSX-R series, born with the fantastic 'gixxer' 750 and 1,100.

At the time, but also until only a few months ago, I could never have imagined witnessing the exit from the European market of the sports motorcycle series most ingrained (at least for me) in the imagination of racing spirit and pure performance.

Unfortunately, this is indeed the case... In 2022, the whole series of Suzuki GSX-R came off the European lists and is no longer available in our market, a blow to the heart for so many fans.

In Suzuki's 2022 motorcycle list, the only sports motorcycle to appear is the Very fast Hayabusa unveiled in 2021.

If you are curious to check it out and see for yourself, here is the Suzuki official motorcycle list 2022.

The GSX-R series, until 2021, was prensent with the following models.

Suzuki GSX-R 125

It was not necessary that would win the 2020 MotoGP why Suzuki was considered a queen among sportbikes. The GSX-R's racing nature treads the 35-year-long furrow carved by the Hamamatsu manufacturer's technology, and today more than ever it is the bike of choice for anyone wishing to approach the world of sportbikes.

The little GSX-R 125 in action between the curbs

Indeed, it is mind-blowing to realize that the little GSX-R is "only" a 125 cc. Its light weight and performance make it unbeatable in its class. This little powerhouse of technology on two wheels has a power-to-weight ratio and aacceleration that place it at the top of its class. In addition, the frame and chassis enable agile and safe riding in any situation, all with a very low consumption.

The GSX-R 125 is a real sport, designed for kids who demand the best. Whether it's used in the city to go to school, or in the country for an out-of-town trip, you'll always feel like you're riding a supersport that's agile, maneuverable, but above all stable. Sensations that will accompany you on every model in the GSX-R range, because the look and line of this small 125 has nothing to envy the models of larger displacement.

It is difficult to imagine, for a young centaur, a more appealing motorcycle than this GSX-R 125, for in every feature we find it at the top of its class, and where the technical supremacy, however, it is difficult to find a more aggressive, racing and youthful look than the line of this little "Gixxer."

Suzuki GSX-R125

In short, it remains difficult to find a flaw that would overshadow it: it is the most powerful engine in its class, it develops 15 hp for 135 kg weight, with 11.5 Nm of torque at 8000 rpm and fuel consumption of 2lt./100 km.

But, let us go into further detail:

  • Liquid-cooled 4-valve DOHC engine. Outputting 'only' 15 hp to meet European standards for the category, it is a modern powerplant with a progression and stretch that is hard to match. The 6-speed gearbox is very precise, with a sixth gear that allows it to propel itself well beyond the 130 mph indicated;
  • Excellent components also for the suspension, frame and swingarm departments. With the latter two made of steel. The fork has no adjustment as does the monoshock, which, however, enjoys progressive linkage, quite unusual for this category;
  • Multifunction LCD instrumentation that allows you to keep track of speed, engine RPM, fuel level, total and partial km, gears engaged, and time;
  • Key-less for ignition;
  • Easy start easy start;
  • Split exhaust terminal;
  • Lightweight aluminum wheels with 90/80-17 and 130/80-17 tires, with Dunlop D102 as original equipment;
  • Two-channel ABS braking system;
  • Euro 4.

It is important to note that, being derived from the asian market, the riding position is not particularly easy for the size of taller boys. However, the ease of riding makes it agile e snappy, especially when traffic intensifies. It therefore turns out to be perfect for those who are not particularly tall or for girls concerned about the size and weight of motorcycles.

Another notable note is the price: about 4,500 euros, which puts the GSX-R 125 in a mid-range market. Its antagonists KTM, Aprilia and Yamaha, in fact, cost significantly more. Only Honda we can say is cheaper, but it certainly has neither equipment nor appeal than the little Suzuki.

Suzuki GSX-R125 blue GP

Le colorings of 2021 are black with red trim, and for those who are MotoGP fans, for only 100 euros more, you can have the "BLUE GP". This model has nothing different with regard to technical and performance characteristics, but it is definitely more "racing" in appearance.

GSX-R 600 and GSX-R 750 OUT OF LIST IN ITALY.

The legendary GSX-R 600 and 750 unfortunately. Have not been marketed in Italy since 2017, the year in which their distribution ceased. Evidently the dynamics of the Italian motorcycle market do not make this kind of investment worthwhile for Suzuki Italy.

The development and production of these 2 mid-range and mid-range sports models obviously did not stop, and the 2 models are regularly on sale in foreign markets. Both models were renewed just this year and are thus available in 2021 versions.

The incredible Gixxer 750 has a great sporting history behind him, won to the tune of victories between the curbs of the circuits of the old World Superbike Championship.

From the mid-2000s until it was taken off the list, it was the only 750cc supersport to be in production, making happy all those motorcyclists looking for a motorcycle with very high performance but at the same time Agile and exploitable on the road and on the track.

Recall, for example, the GSXR 750 K6 / K7 (and subsequent models) that is still highly valued today for its performance and for his now well-known reliability also for exclusive use in track.

A motorcycle like this represents the perfect compromise between the usability and agility of the smaller 600cc and the power and speed of the 1,000cc, and it is a pity that it is no longer available in the Italian market.
